Dental Bridges from Confidental Clinic in Streatham

What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge is used to replace a missing tooth to restore function and aesthetics and is basically a false tooth attached to the teeth either side of the gap. Dental bridges are cemented in place and not removable. There are three different types of dental bridges:

Types of bridge

Fixed Bridge: The most popular and reliable type of bridge. The false tooth is attached to two dental crowns either side which are then fixed to the prepared teeth either side of the gap. A fixed bridge is usually recommended if the teeth either side are already crowned or require crown treatment and have a good long term prognosis. It would not be recommended to take away healthy tooth tissue to prepare for a fixed bridge.

Cantilever Bridge: Is a false tooth attached to one crown only. These are used where there is only one suitable tooth to support a bridge and mainly used for front restorations as they are not strong enough to support function at the back of the mouth.

Resin Bonded (Maryland) Bridge: Is a false tooth with a metal wing attached to the non-visible surface of the natural teeth either side of the gap. These bridges are recommended if the teeth holding the bridge in place are strong and healthy.
Fixed and Cantilever Dental Bridges are available in many different materials, each one has its own merits:

  • All Ceramic, strong tooth coloured metal free and can be used in all areas of the mouth
  • Emax, highly aesthetic and very strong metal free crown. Suitable for restorations on both front and back teeth
  • Porcelain bonded, strong metal crowns with porcelain bonded to the outside surface to provide an aesthetic value

Looking after your dental bridge

It is important that dental bridges are well looked after and an oral health regime is maintained even where the false tooth is. Food and bacteria can still get trapped underneath the false tooth and using interdental aids can prevent these causing problems to the surrounding gum and teeth. Your dentist at ConfiDental Clinic, Streatham will discuss specific oral health instructions so you are best informed how to look after and maintain your dental bridge.
