Illegal Teeth Whitening Still Happening in London

Illegal Teeth Whitening Still Happening in London

A warning to Streatham patients to avoid potentially dangerous treatments.

An investigation earlier this year revealed that there are an increasing number of illegal teeth whitening outlets opening in London. Although this practise is now banned unless performed by a qualified dental professional, it seems that some beauticians in London are still providing this service.

Although a teeth whitening treatment is highly effective and perfectly safe in qualified hands, there are some very good reasons why you should have this done at a dentists, such as the Confidental Clinic, and not at some illegal outlet.

What’s the harm?

As a teeth whitening procedure is, on the face of it, a purely cosmetic and non invasive treatment, you might be asking yourself what harm could possibly be done if you use an illegal outlet. The answer is quite simply, a lot!

Whitening the teeth involves the use of a substance called hydrogen peroxide which is a form of bleach. Home whitening kits contain around 0.01% hydrogen peroxide, whilst the maximum that a dentist is allowed to use is 6%. As you can see, there is a big difference here due to the safety of having teeth whitening done by a dentist, with the difference also being seen in the end results.

The 6% that our Streatham cosmetic dentist is allowed to use will provide you with great looking teeth perfectly safely. Some illegal outlets, on the other hand, were found to be using hydrogen peroxide at around 25%, over four times that a qualified dentist can use. In addition to that, it was also found that some practitioners had just one day’s training before being allowed to perform this procedure. Dental training takes approximately five years, so it isn’t difficult to guess who has the most knowledge about your teeth!

The end results

With a professional teeth whitening treatment performed at the Confidental Clinic, you will see a significant improvement in the colour of your teeth within just a week or so. Aside for perhaps a little extra sensitivity for a few days, there are no side effects. Those who have used illegal outlets though are at serious risk of not only quite a lot of pain, but also damage to the teeth and gums, possibly even leading to tooth loss.

If you live in London and have been tempted to have your teeth whitened, our advice is to only use a dentist. Do NOT risk your teeth using an illegal outlet. Even saving a few pounds simply isn’t worth it.
